Librarie Plon, 1925. 8vo, softcover wrappers, uncut page leaves, 282pp. First edition, the principal volume in the Roseau d’Or series by Plon. Ex-libris copy from the Jacques Maritain Center at Notre Dame University. Association copy, inscribed by the philosopher to Noemi Renan, daughter of Ernest Renan (1823-1892), French orientalist scholar and philosopher of religion. Inscription to the front flyleaf reads: “a Madame Noemi Renan a de’moignage de tres respecheuse et tres fidele affection Jas.’ Collegiate bookplates affixed to reverse of both wrappers, discreet stamping to text block, foxing to endpapers and various page leaves. Small chips and creases to top edges of wrappers, slight curl to corners. The original French language edition of the short text on Luther, Descartes and Rousseau in six portraits by the eminent French Catholic intellectual, philosopher, historian and key figure in the 20th century revival of Thomism, the French Catholic Renaissance and the Catholic Literary Revival. Scarce signed. A presentable copy preserved in shrink wraps. Very Good.
